Hap Ki Do is more than a martial art, it is a system of personal mastery that combines mental discipline with practical self-defense. At United Martial Arts, we teach Hap Ki Do not only as a form of protection, but as a path to physical coordination, inner peace, and character development.
Our approach emphasizes balance, redirection, and personal growth. Students of all ages and abilities will find that Hap Ki Do teaches them to stay calm under pressure, respond with control, and move through the world with quiet confidence.

Rooted in Korean tradition, Hap Ki Do translates as “the way of coordinated energy.” It blends circular motion, joint locks, pressure points, and redirection techniques to neutralize threats without resorting to brute strength. It is often called a “soft” style of martial arts because it does not rely on force against force.
“If someone grabs you or strikes you, you’re left with one option—defend yourself with control,” says Master David. “Hap Ki Do gives you that control, physically and mentally.”
Unlike hard styles that meet aggression with aggression, Hap Ki Do teaches you how to defuse conflict. You learn how to use an attacker’s energy against them, allowing you to remain calm, composed, and in command of the situation.
Hap Ki Do develops the full person—body, mind, and spirit. While the physical techniques are powerful and effective, it is the inner transformation that truly sets this art apart.
Students gain:
Master David explains it this way: “It’s not just about getting stronger. It’s about learning to carry yourself with dignity, even when things get difficult. That’s what makes the difference.”
At UMAC, our Hap Ki Do training is deeply rooted in values. We believe that character development is just as important as physical skill. Our students are taught to live by the principles of courtesy, respect, humility, loyalty, and self-control.
This value-based approach is especially meaningful for children and teens. Hap Ki Do helps them regulate emotions, think before reacting, and build a strong internal compass. For adults, it offers a powerful way to reconnect with balance and resilience in daily life.
Everyone. Whether you are brand new to martial arts or returning to training after years away, Hap Ki Do is adaptable, accessible, and deeply rewarding. We tailor each student’s journey to their needs, experience level, and goals.
